Another form of recycling are thrift shops where people donate things no longer needed but are in excellent condition. We have a plethora of such stores in and around our community and we encourage you to take advantage of them either by donating or buying items of interest. The funds generated by such stores typically go to supporting local charities. Such stores include: Wildbird Treasure Nest located at 674 Peace Portal Drive, Blaine. Phone: (360) 224-3527. (Website) Store Hours: Monday–Saturday, 10am–5pm; Sunday, 10am–4pm. The store supports Wildbird Charity. All proceeds after cost of doing business go toward Wildbird’s efforts in the community. Wildbird’s primary focus is addressing poverty issues in Whatcom County. They have a number of projects that include: street outreach and meals, veteran outreach and support, emergency support to individuals who need assistance in accessing community resources, and a new program to feed children who are coming to school hungry on Monday mornings.

The Community Assistance Program (CAP) Clothing Bank is located at 500 C Street, Blaine – adjacent to the Blaine Food Bank. Store Hours: Mondays and Fridays, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm; Wednesdays, 5:00 – 7:00 pm.  The Clothing Bank takes donations of new or gently used clothing and bedding during open store hours. If you wouldn’t wear it or use it, please don’t donate it. A collection bin outside is available for donations during other times. Please bag items before putting them in the bin as weather and vermin can and will contaminate and soil your needed donations. The Clothing Bank does not accept shoes, toys, electronics, or household goods. All donations are available free of charge to anyone in the Blaine, Birch Bay, Custer and Point Roberts communities. The CAP Clothing Bank is staffed entirely by volunteers who assist anyone needing clothing or bedding.

Assistance League Gift and Thrift Store located at 2817 Meridian St, Bellingham. (Phone: 360) 738-2803 (website, Facebook, Instagram) Store Hours: Tues – Sat, 10 am – 5 pm. This store sells donated good quality apparel, home goods, furniture & books to benefit local charities. This past year 158 member volunteers contributed over 40,200 hours of service, supporting four philanthropic programs: Operation School Bell, which provides new school clothing and shoes to students in need in K through 12 grades, The Enrichment Scholarship Program provides over $50,000 in summer scholarships to local middle and high school public school students, The Care Center Support program supports the residents in eight local care centers without family or friends to remember them on special occasions, and Hospital Patient Support program provides new, comfortable clothing to the Emergency Department at Peace Health St. Joseph Medical Center. T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants are distributed to patients who, in the event of injury, assault or trauma, do not have clothing to wear home from the hospital. The program also provides appropriate new clothing for homeless or disoriented patients who are brought into the emergency room. Donation times at their store for items of good quality are Wednesday – Saturday 10 am to 4pm.

It uses the funds generated by this store to operate numerous outreach and support programs including: homeless shelters, transitional housing programs, permanent supportive housing services, job training, combating substance abuse, assist veterans in need, fight human trafficking, to mention just a few.

(Website, Facebook) Goodwill provides quality, effective employment training and basic education to individuals experiencing significant barriers to economic opportunity. It raises money through donations and proceeds from its retail stores.
